The Need
Despite continuous advancements in detection and treatment, cancer is increasingly common and remains the second leading cause of disease-related death among American adults. Too many of our family members and friends are suffering from the effects of cancer. Each year in South Carolina, more than 26,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed and more than 9,600 men and women succumb to the disease. Last year, in our tri-county area alone, three people lost their battle against cancer – every day.
Creating More Tomorrows
With ongoing clinical research, promising new technologies, determined cancer specialists and visionary leaders, Roper St. Francis Healthcare is uniquely positioned to help more patients and families live the life they envision – a life with more tomorrows. Through philanthropy, we will advance the cancer care experience by providing patients with even greater access to cancer specialists, treatments, clinical trials and support services. Whether patients are newly diagnosed, currently fighting or learning to live beyond cancer, donors who generously invest in the Creating More Tomorrows campaign will have a tremendous impact on the cancer journey.
Achieving Innovation and Excellence in Specialty Oncology Care
A specialty oncology care unit at Roper Hospital will allow us to care for our sickest patients in a world-class space. With a $1 million initial gift secured to fund the Mott Bone Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy unit, Roper St. Francis Healthcare seeks additional funding to build a 13-bed specialty oncology care unit to care for patients battling lymphoma, leukemia, and other high acuity cancers.
CAR T-cell therapy is a type of treatment in which a patient’s T cells – part of the immune system – are modified in the laboratory to attack cancer cells. Results from initial CAR T-cell clinical trials were remarkable. For instance, one trial studied CAR T-cell therapy in 101 adult patients whose diffuse large B-cell lymphoma did not respond to treatment or returned after bone marrow transplant. Cancer was reduced in 82% of patients. Cancer was eliminated in 54% of patients. For those patients whose life expectancy was weeks or months, the median overall survival rate was greater than 2 years. With philanthropic support, Roper St. Francis Healthcare is planning to participate in a multicenter clinical trial by producing CAR T cells on site at a fraction of the commercial cost.

Teammate Assistance Fund
Our team members and caregivers at Roper St. Francis Healthcare create life-changing moments for our patients every day. Through philanthropic support, many team members have been helped through difficult times thanks to the Teammate Assistance Fund.
Last year, a team member working in a medical practice found herself in a housing crisis. She and her three children were living in hotels while seeking a stable home. With the help of the Teammate Assistance Fund and the Salvation Army, she was able to pull together the first month’s rent plus security deposit and utility fees to move into a permanent residence.
Our teammate expressed her gratitude saying, "Thank God my family is doing so well. Without the Teammate Assistance Fund and other resources, getting out of our crisis as fast as we did would not have been possible. We would like to thank all of those who contributed to this wonderful program. May God bless you all."
Donating to the Teammate Assistance Fund can greatly improve the quality of lives of those who work at Roper St. Francis Healthcare so they can continue to provide quality, compassionate care to our patients.
