Patient Experience

Roper St. Francis Healthcare cares for more Lowcountry families than any other local healthcare provider. Our mission is simple: healing all people with compassion, faith and excellence. Your experience matters and is a priority in our system of care. By supporting the following fundraising initiatives, you are further enhancing the patient experience.

Heart and Vascular Wellness Institute

The Need
Heart disease – including coronary heart disease, hypertension and stroke – is the leading cause of death in both men and women in the United States. But, many don’t know they are at risk. Each year more than 1 million people will have a heart attack and nearly 450,000 of those will result in death. Heart disease is also consistently the leading cause of death for South Carolinians, particularly amongst African American and female patient populations. In 2017 alone, over 10,000 South Carolinians died from heart disease and it accounted for almost 54,000 hospitalizations across our state.

Addressing the Patient Experience through Heart and Vascular Wellness Institute
Through visionary clinical leadership and our commitment to leading-edge, compassionate care, Heart & Vascular Care at Roper St. Francis Healthcare is paving the way to lowering these statistics. We efficiently and effectively identify, diagnose and treat heart patients with the goal of saving and transforming lives. We are also dedicated to prevention and education initiatives that benefit our patients, their families and the greater community.

With your help, more can be done to provide even better support and guidance for our patients on their journey to better heart health and improved quality of life. Through philanthropy, we are dedicated to creating a Heart & Vascular Wellness Institute that will enhance the patient experience and provide increased access to critical follow-up care. By offering and coordinating a range of support services and programs, The Institute will allow us to support all our patients’ needs as we heal their hearts, minds and spirits.

Cancer Wellness Navigator

The Need
Despite continuous advancements in detection and treatment, cancer is increasingly common and remains the second leading cause of disease-related death among American adults. Too many of our family members and friends are suffering from the effects of cancer. Each year in South Carolina, more than 26,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed and more than 9,600 men and women succumb to the disease. Last year, in our tri-county area alone, three people lost their battle against cancer – every day.

Creating More Tomorrows
With ongoing clinical research, promising new technologies, determined cancer specialists and visionary leaders, Roper St. Francis Healthcare is uniquely positioned to help more patients and families live the life they envision – a life with more tomorrows. Through philanthropy, we will advance the cancer care experience by providing patients with even greater access to cancer specialists, treatments, clinical trials and support services. Whether patients are newly diagnosed, currently fighting or learning to live beyond cancer, donors who generously invest in the Creating More Tomorrows campaign will have a tremendous impact on the cancer journey.

Caring for the Mind, Body and Spirit through Cancer Wellness Navigator
Wellness navigation and social support is an instrumental part of how we care for the minds, bodies and spirits of our patients battling cancer. Our licensed clinical social worker serves nearly 300 patients each year, providing in-depth personalized psychosocial treatment and counseling to address barriers to treatment, financial needs and emotional distress. As the need for social support grows, Roper St. Francis Healthcare looks to add a second social worker to care for more patients. With a $1 million gift secured, the Foundation seeks an additional $600,000 to endow a second social worker position.

Women's and Infant's Health

The Need
More than 2,500 women trust Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital to deliver their baby each year. The labor and delivery unit is over 20 years old – without any significant upgrade since its opening. With a fast and constant turnover, the quality of the rooms no longer reflects the level of care we provide. We believe our moms and babies deserve a refreshed space that fits the experience of growing a family and better aligns with the world-class care we provide.

Addressing the Need through Women's and Infant's Health
Bringing a new life into the world is a wonderful, joyful event. At Roper St. Francis Healthcare, we are committed to making childbirth a positive and memorable experience for you and your family – from the earliest days of pregnancy through your delivery and recovery. The Women's and Infant's Center at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital includes an intermediate care nursery, including 24/7 onsite neonatology, an onsite maternal fetal medicine program, laborist service, a dedicated 24/7 obstetrical emergency department, child birth preparedness classes, lactation services, gynecological services and so much more.

Through philanthropy, we will renovate the first floor of the Women’s Center at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital to ensure the physical space matches the excellent care and experience we provide. With your support, we will renovate Labor and Delivery and the Level II Nursery to include:

  • Refreshed rooms with new flooring, casework and paint
  • Redesigned and renovated bathrooms
  • Combine two current labor rooms to create 10 larger labor suites
  • Dedicated low-birth intervention rooms to include spa-like bathrooms and labor support equipment
  • Updated nursery with reconfigured space to allow for increased privacy for families

How You Can Help
With philanthropic support, we will give our new mothers a safe and beautiful space in which to expand their families under the care of the best clinical providers in the Lowcountry. We hope you will consider investing in women and infant health at Roper St. Francis Healthcare.

Recognition Opportunities
In appreciation of your investment, several donor recognition opportunities may be available. The Roper St. Francis Foundation will work with you to ensure your gift is recognized in a format fitting of your generosity and vision.

Our ultimate goal is to help patients find their strength as they work towards reaching their highest level of independence.

Our interdisciplinary teams provide a regimen of physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology and recreational therapy along with involvement from neuropsychology and social work. This team is overseen by physicians who are board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as well as additional certifications in Spinal Cord Medicine. Additionally, Roper Rehabilitation Services provides a comprehensive range of outpatient rehabilitation options, including hospital-based rehabilitation and physical therapy services for outpatients at each of our flagship hospitals.

Yet, we know that more can be done to provide our patients and their families with the highest quality care experience along the road to recovery. Through philanthropy, we are dedicated to providing first-class facility updates to Roper Rehabilitation Hospital that will foster an environment of hope and innovation as we help to heal patients’ bodies, minds and spirits. Additionally, we will commit to investing in our nursing staff, therapists and physicians through the establishment of the Roper Rehabilitation Services Teammate Excellence Fund. Donors will be able to directly support our dedicated teammates by investing in their pursuit of research, continuing education trainings and the adoption of global best practices in personalized rehabilitation medicine.
